As you probably already know, in order for an affiliate business to be successful online, you MUST have traffic. And you can get traffic either by PPC (pay-per-click) advertising, or by ranking naturally on the search engines, by using SEO (search engine optimization).
Recent studies have shown a very important trend in terms of efficiency if we compare PPC rankings and SEO rankings on Google.
Unlike many marketers are thinking, the paid results from Google AdWords are not giving such a good CTR (click through ratio).
If anyone had to choose between the first PAID ranking or the first ORGANIC ranking, you should not even bother wondering for a second which one to choose.
Here is a display that shows the latest click trends from people using a “click heat map”.. I’ll show you what it is later.
Google’s CTR as of summer 2010 :

As you can see, the top and side PAID advertising are only getting between 2 and 3% of the millions of clicks on Google everyday.
On the other hand, the top 3 organic results are getting on average between 7% and 45% or all clicks on the first page in a day…
And by the way, results 4 to 9 are also getting 2-3% clicks, while #10 is getting 3-4% clicks. You just need to rank on the first page and you get as much clicks as if you were paying for those.. But for FREE.
Hold on.
Let me ask you this… how much have you paid into PPC in the last week, or month ? How about within the last year ? How about investing the same amount into outsourcing to build backlinks from social bookmarks and articles to your site ?
But the big question is..
Can you really rank #1 on Google ? And how to do it ?
Well, Good news !
Google is just in the middle of one of their big changes !
Every 2 to 5 years, the famous Google algorithms are taking a spin and are focussing on a new different aspect of marketing to make sure that the top results reflects what the NORMAL PERSON would be likely to look for !
So using the Google toolbar, Google chrome and FeedBurner, they are able to notice the trend. And whenever they feel appropriate, they change their “winning formula” let’s say.
Let’s take a look at the different changes that Google went through within the last few years.
Google from 1998 to 2003 – The Link Revolution
Google’s first algorithm was simple but effective.
The more quality backlinks pointing to your site, the better you would rank. Every website has a page rank (PR) from 0 to 9, 9 being the ultimate reference online.
The more links you had coming from higher PR websites, the better you could rank.
Google from 2003 to 2006 – The Content Revolution
June 18, 2003, Google launched their Adsense program.
What they were looking for at this point, was to make sure good content was promoted on the listed websites, so they launched AdSense, a program that pays the affiliates for every click you get on those ads.
The only problem with that formula was that link and quality did not have anymore importance.
DUMB or DUMBER!
Because when something is too easy, there is always someone there to abuse of the system.
So the infamous spammers appeared.
If you were connected at that time, you can remember seeing TONS of websites that were just literally filled with AdSense ads and almost no real content, and yet they were ranking very well.
Because of this, Google’s results became GARBAGE basically, so they freaked out.
What to do then ?
Spin the wheel again, but since they knew what had been successful, why not going back to the linking importance, but with a bigger focus on QUALITY?
Google from 2006 to early 2010 – The Link Revolution AGAIN
This is the formula that was used up until only a few weeks or months.
Basically, to rank on the first page, you needed some quality content, but most of all some highly relevant backlinks, in a certain quantity.
It did make sense, but it didn’t take too long before the SEO freaks created softwares to generate fake automated posts on blogs, and automatically generated garbage articles that were copied and posted back online by thousands.
Which made the real quality websites harder to appear on the first page.
But here comes the NEW Google Rules
And just recently, with the incredible BOOM generated by the social media, Google just changed the rules once again…
And you might like this one, because it is relying on a system that milions of people are using on a daily basis.
Of course, you will always need quality content.
Obviously, you will also need some quality backlinks coming from related websites.
But they have added the HUMAN part to their algorithms.
You !
The third new but very important aspect to consider to rank high on the search engines is
ACTIVITY !
You are going to need :
- Some blog post comments
- RSS subscription
- Clicks leading to social medias as Facebook, Digg, StumbleUpon and etc…
- Active forums
- Opt-in subscriptions
In other words, the people on your website are going to need to INTERACT !
And it does make sense !
Because if the visitors on your website are coming in and out in a second, it clearly shows you have no good content.
But if someone sticks to your website and wants to share it with their friends and want to participate to your website, it is probably because you are doing something right !
And how many people do you know are using Facebook. Maybe we should ask the other way around, how many people do you know who are NOT registered to Facebook ?
Here you go ! Everybody is using social medias now ! So as an affiliate marketer, if you want to start ranking on the first page of Google and generate your affiliate sales, get SOCIAL !
And for this very reason, I invite you to comment about this new change in Google’s algorithms.
No autogenerated comments, no BS, just you sharing your point of view!
No back to my new SEO formula…
